Key Academic Areas Addressed with ABA Therapy
As part of ABA therapy, our team may sometimes use academic platforms such as IXL, RAZ, or similar programs. It is important to clarify that these tools are not being used in the same way a school teacher or tutor would. Under the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO), Registered Behaviour Analysts (RBAs) do not provide academic tutoring or curriculum instruction, as this falls within the professional scope of certified teachers.
Instead, our role is to use ABA strategies to build the underlying skills that help children succeed with academics. For example, we may use IXL to work on persistence, attention, problem solving, or tolerance for making mistakes, or use RAZ to support comprehension through prompting, reinforcement, and task analysis. These strategies strengthen foundational skills that support learning, independence, and success in the classroom.
By keeping roles clear, we ensure ethical practice, avoid misunderstandings, and foster meaningful collaboration with teachers who lead academic programming.
Our aba academic learning programs target a variety of skills including but not limited to the following:
-
Literacy: Letter recognition, phonics, sight words recognition, reading fluency & reading comprehension.
-
Mathematics: Number recognition, counting, addition/subtraction/multiplication/division, math facts, skip counting
-
Writing: Tracing, copying, sentence structure. paragraph writing, report writing, narratives, expository writing
-
Classroom Readiness: Attending, following directions, transitioning, group work.
-
Executive Functioning: task analysis, planning, organization, execution
